A Cognitive Tutor for Open-Ended Problem Solving in Chemistry

Yaron, D. & S. Raysor

The domain of chemistry requires complex, multistep, problem solving. Current online homework systems are largely limited to either minimally scaffolded questions, where only the final answer is checked, or heavily scaffolded questions, that walk students through each step of the problem. We will provide a hands-on demonstration of a cognitive tutor, built on CMU’s CTAT, that provides students with a “blank page” on which to work through a problem, while still providing scaffolding as needed. The tutor monitors the problem solving and provides hints and feedback accordingly. The tutor will be built into OLI General Chemistry courseware, enabling controlled learning studies in real classrooms.
